Let's give 'em somethin' to talk about
Apple store appears headed for Highland Village
No one is talking on the record, but it sure looks like Highland Village is getting an Apple store.
Here's what we've discovered:
- The big yellow box under construction at the center on Westheimer, near Drexel, is being outfitted with a high-quality electrical grid that can handle lots of computers. Barring the establishment of a gilded Radio Shack, Apple appears a logical choice for such a sophisticated system.
- Employees at several neighboring businesses say it's common knowledge around the center that Apple is on its way. "We heard from our managers that it's scheduled to open in January," one employee whispered. "But we're not allowed to say."
- ifoAppleStore.com, a site that tracks new Apple stores like a bracketologist monitors the NCAA Tournament field, had nothing but concrete hope to bestow upon a Highland Village location:
A tipster pointed to this relatively small mall southwest of downtown and near I-610, and about one mile from the existing Houston Galleria store. It includes several upscale retailers. The space is directly east of the new Sprinkles Cupcakes store, and bears some resemblance to the Scottsdale Quarter store. Store construction is just underway in late 2010, and the store will open in 2011.
Of course, Apple isn't talking. The notoriously tight-lipped company often doesn't confirm a store opening until days before it's up and running.
A Highland Village representative confirmed the center is negotiating with Apple, but no contract has been signed.
We'll keep our fingers crossed.
