Like a prayer: New Hindu temple in the Woodlands aims to deliver convenience &yoga
The Woodlands is getting a dose of good karma.
After years of commuting an hour and a half to Pearland for religious services, Hindus in North Houston and Montgomery County are well on the way to establishing their own religious house, the Hindu Temple of The Woodlands.
With a bricklaying ceremony or Ishtaka Sthapana in late June, the Temple kicked off its major operations, aiming to raise $500,000 by September and open doors by the end of 2010.
Ishtaka Shtapana included a crowd of over 300 for the puja worship ceremony, the singing of bhajans, or devotional songs, and dance and musical performances.
Situated on 8.35 acres, the temple aims to build a place of worship that caters to the needs of the community according to the Hindu/Vedic philosophy, to offer educational, cultural and community service activities and promote Hindu traditions and values.
The board hopes to encourage visitors from all religious backgrounds by offering classes with mainstream appeal like yoga and vegetarian cooking.
