Obvioulsy, loads of tender, loving care have gone into this quaint bungalow in the East Lawn subdivision, located just beyond the boundaries of the more gentrified Eastwood. During her decade of ownership, the current resident has taken this 1930s era dwelling and upgraded, updated and decorated, moving the house well beyond the esthetics of the transitional neighborhood.
Roosters crow from a nearby neighbor's yard. Doves coo from the trees shading the owner's back lawn. Aging trucks careen down the back street where an apartment complex houses solid working class neighbors.
This charming brick and limestone house is crying out for urban pioneers, those who know a good buy when they see it and who don't shy away from seriously transitional surroundings.
Walk through: Up the front steps, across the porch and through the front door we go, entering into the living room that is sunny (original full-length mullioned windows) and spacious for a house of this period. The original fireplace remains intact. Original hardwood floors remain throughout the house.
The genius of this owner becomes apparent when you see the walk-in closet, formerly a porch that now provides ample storage space.
To the right is the dining room, where less heavy furniture than what the current owner has would provide a more spacious feel. At the moment, it seems cramped. But we think it's due to the bulky chairs and corner china cabinet.
Just beyond is the updated kitchen, surprisingly large enough for a breakfast table, with modern appliances and plenty of cabinet space.
Two bedrooms occupy the ground floor, the master large enough to comfortably accommodate a king-size bed. The genius of this owner becomes apparent when you see the walk-in closet, formerly a porch that now provides ample storage space that is rare in this type of bungalow.
The top floor is the bonus. The rambling converted attic space, centered with the stairwell, serves as TV room on one side and guest bedroom on the other, though the bedroom is not completely private as it opens somewhat to the TV area.
Each of the two bathrooms have been charmingly updated.
Love: The attention to decorative detail and preservation of the character of the house makes it very appealing as does the detached garage and tree-shaded backyard. Though small, the fenced-in green space is large enough for outdoor entertaining.
The challenge: The house sits half a block from bustling Telephone Road. The neighborhood is clearly in transition. But then again, you are only minutes from downtown, a clear advantage for urban pioneers hoping to avoid a long commute.
