Macy's plans to close Texas City store; clearance sale starts Sunday
Macy's has announced plans to close four Bloomingdales and five Macy's stores — including the Macy's store in the The Mall of the Mainland in Texas City.
"We continue to be committed to maintaining a healthy portfolio of stores that allows us to focus on growth from our best and most productive locations," CEO Terry J. Lundgren said in a press release. "This requires us to make some difficult decisions to close stores that no longer meet our performance requirements, as well as to open stores where we see opportunity."
Other Macy's store closings are in Topeka, Kan.; Laurel, Md.; Parma, Ohio and Antioch, Tenn. Bloomingdales closures are in Atlanta; Oak Brook, Ill.; North Bethesda, Md.; and in the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn.
More than 830 employees will be affected by the closings, although some may be offered jobs in other Macy's stores. The retailer plans to open five new Macy's stores (none in Texas) and one replacement store in Bay Shore, N.Y., as well as new Bloomingdales in Glendale, Calif., and Palo Alto, Calif., and five Bloomindales outlets (two in the Dallas area).
Clearance sales will begin at the affected stores Sunday and run for 10 weeks.
Macy's will continue to operate 19 stores in the greater Houston area.
