top places to work
Here are the top 5 places to work in Houston, according to new national survey
Recent news has simply proven what Houstonians already know: the Bayou City is the capital of Southern cool and one of the top cities to live in the U.S. But what about our work life? A new report finds the top companies delivering a great working experience for their employees — and the results could be somewhat surprising to locals.
A study by Indeed surveyed the top places to work in 12 hot American cities. Houston and Austin are the sole Texas cities to appear in the list, which taps into the 72 million ratings and reviews listed on Indeed Company Pages. (The list centers on firms with corporate or satellite offices in each metro area.)
Interestingly to Houstonians, the city is lauded for its diversity in population and, in this case, commerce: No energy companies make Indeed’s top five places to work. Rather, two tech firms — SAP and Microsoft — top the list at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Rounding out the top five are construction company McCarthy Building Company, luxury apartment investment firm Camden Property Trust, and Discount Tire Company.
“Sprawling Houston provides ample opportunities for both construction and real estate investment,” according to Indeed. A consultant who works at Camden Property Trust tells Indeed that the Camden offers “sense of family” and great management. “The people at the top know what they’re doing and it shows,” he says.
In Austin, which was recently named a major economic powerhouse, tech is still tops. But of interest to Austinites, the two best places to work, according to Indeed, are Keller Williams Realty and H-E-B. Tech titans Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple round out the top five.
How did Keller Williams score the top spot? A real estate consultant tells Indeed that “their training is unmatched,” adding that “starting here is the best way to learn how to be an amazing agent.” Texas’ beloved grocer, H-E-B also placed first in Indeed’s Top-Rated Workplaces: Retail in 2017.
