Another round of bad pants (and bad golf) for John Daly — but could he qualifyfor our Bad Pants Competition?
- John Daly wore a pair of black and red zebra print pants during the third roundof the British Open
- Daly's girlfriend, Anna Cladakis, wore a skirt in a matching zebra print.
- Jose Alfredo Saucedo's design of a pair of knickers dotted with plasticsunglasses gets raves from New York fashion critic Joe Amodio but lags in lastplace
- Will Baldwin's pink drop crotch pants design is running neck and neck.....
- ....with Francisco J. Castillo's bell bottoms.
The bad pants march continues at the British Open. John Daly traded in paisley prints for garish black-and-red zebra stripes in the third round but failed to break par for the second day in a row. (See an entire gallery of Daly's bad pants on Foxsports.com.)
Those pants would never have made the finals of our Bad Pants Competition because they don't have the stylish badness that we are looking for. With only a few days still left to vote for a pair of bad pants designed by fashion students at Houston Community College for me to wear to a kickoff party for the 13th Annual Bad Pants Open Golf Tournament at the Clubs of Kingwood, two favorites have emerged.
The design for a pair of really wide bell bottoms in patchwork fabric, designed by Francisco J. Castillo, is running neck-and-neck in the voting with a pair of pink drop crotch pants dotted with pom-pons, designed by Will Baldwin.
But New York fashion critic Joseph V. Amodio has thrown his support behind Jose Alfredo Saucedo's design of knickers dotted with plastic sunglasses that trails the pack.
"'I'm distressed to see he's in last place. SOOOO typical of true greatness--it's never recognized as it should be," emailed Amodio, who writes for Newsday, In Style, the New York TImes magazine and CultureMap.
"So here's my official protest and plug for Saucedo: First off, only he and and Will Baldwin (of the pom-pom drop-crotch pants) have created actual GOLF pants. Yes, you want them to be BAD pants. But not just bad. BAD GOLF pants. The bell-bottoms are funny...but completely inappropriate for golfing--the wide cuffs would get in the way of your swing. And the tight red/black pants are funny, too, sure--they're ALL funny--but the tightness and odd fit (that these are BOUND to have) would impede your swing.
So that really leaves Saucedo and Baldwin. I like both, but Saucedo's are true knickers, which is a nice tip-of-the-hat to actual golfing heritage, while being as BAD as a pair of pants can POSSIBLY be."
