Let freedom ring
Houston's booming list of 4th of July fireworks and festivities, from downtown to Kemah Boardwalk and beyond
Founding Father and second president John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776, that the newly signed Declaration of Independence was something to celebrate. "It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade...Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward and forever more," he said.
Now, 247 years later, Americans may not recall Adams' words, but they surely celebrate this birthday of all birthdays pretty much how he'd imagined.
Houstonians looking for ways to mark our country's most festive national celebration will find a host of things to do this Fourth of July weekend.
The annual Shell Freedom Over Texas celebration, the City of Houston's official 4th of July bash in Eleanor Tinsley Park, features an afternoon and evening of local, regional music performances, headlined by acts like Chris Young, Yola, and TMF. A portion of the day's food and drink sales will benefit the Houston Food Bank, and revelers won't want to miss the "Texas-sized" fireworks finale. Tickets are $10 and the festival kicks off at 4 pm.
For another dazzling outdoor bash, look for the annual Houston Symphony Summer Symphony Nights Star-Spangled Salute at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The classical music concert includes patriotic favorites and a fireworks grand finale. The free event begins at 8:30 pm.
