Angelika exec says art house chain is looking for another Houston location
Even before this weekend's Angelika debacle, CEO Ellen Cotter has refrained from speaking with the Houston media. (The chain's execs haven't returned our calls for weeks.) But she's been more talkative to Dallas reporters, perhaps because Angelika has two thriving theaters there.
Cotter, in Houston to close the Bayou Place theater, told the Dallas Observer Monday that the chain vanished from downtown Houston overnight because the landlord had evicted them, or more technically gave them a 30-day notice.
We enjoyed being down there, and we probably would have stayed, but they terminated our lease. But it's been a great run, and we'll look for another place in Houston. We've been bringing independent films here for 13 years, and hopefully we'll find another location. But the message for the Dallas readers is: Our locations there are fine."
How reassuring.
A Bayou Place rep disputed Cotter's account. The matter is headed for arbitration in Houston.
And we'll have to wait for Cairo Time to come out on DVD.
