Goooaaaaal! Houston tops the leaderboard of World Cup bid cities
With 98 days of voting to go, Houston is the top-ranked bid city in the effort to bring the World Cup to the United States.
FIFA officials will unveil the winning site countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups on Dec. 2, after touring five bidding cities from each country that is competing to host.
For 2018, the contenders are the United States, England, Russia, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium. All these countries plus Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea are in the running to host in 2022.
If the United States is successful, American host cities will be chosen by their soccer facilities and interest. Nine cities from the 18 current selections across the country will host matches.
But if we want Reliant Stadium to be the site of the finals (and not just some group-round games) Houston soccer fans need to head to gousabid.com and show their support. We may be on top for now, but Miami and Tampa Bay are right behind us.
