Words with Friends IRL
Scrabble in the City arranges tiles and encourages bribes by table dance at OneShell Plaza
- Letters, letters, letters! So many possibilities, so little time.
- Tonight's event benefiting Literacy Advance of Houston should bring out some ofthe city's top letter arrangers.
Virtual friends often satiate the average webinerd's appetite for companionship. But sometimes, the feel of your iPhone in your hand while squinting over Words With Friends just doesn't feel very chummy.
If you're yearning to make a word out of jumbled, wooden letters in the flesh, look (up) no further than the 49th Floor of One Shell Plaza for your tile-tweaking fix.
Scrabble in the City, benefiting Literacy Advance of Houston, scrambles into place this evening at The Plaza Club downtown.
Teams of four will vie for year-long ownership of the coveted Traveling Trophy, but Literacy Advance's Deputy Director Melanie Fisk cheerfully says, "You can be pretty terrible and still win."
That's because the winner of this 150-person competition doesn't necessarily take it all.
A foursome is declared the victor following the conclusion of round one. But the un-wordsmith-worthy teams, according to Fisk, have the opportunity to "bribe the judges" in round two. Bribes may range from buying tiles to dancing on tables. It's up to the judges to accept or not, but all bribes will be turned over to Literacy Advance at the end of the night.
Want to follow along with the board game bedlam at home? Tweeting (but hopefully not cheating) participants are encouraged to use the #EVscrab0722 hashtag on Twitter.
And maybe next year, you, too, will have a shot at the glory of the Traveling Trophy.
