Houston hipsters and LCD Soundsystem: A match made in video heaven?
Could Houston become the next music video production powerhouse? A critical mass of counter culture kids is trying their best to make it a reality.
Scouring the social media stratosphere to invite extras for "several party scenes," Funwunce Supergroup and RGD Films has set out to produce a video for indie rock band LCD Soundsystem's song "Home."
It's an ambitious project: LCD Soundsystem has gradually risen in the ranks of indie stardom with its corrosive art-rock sound and encyclopedic knowledge of post-punk aesthetics. The band's most recent (and supposedly final) album, This is Happening, has been labeled by Pitchfork as a "phenomenal coup" and the "embodiment of coolness."
Stated Funwunce's Facebook event invitation for an early June shooting day, "We're not going to be asking people to do much other than simply 'be there, drinking.' Sooo this shouldn't be that new of an experience for most of you."
"Try and bring a 2nd change of clothes, not for mess but more to break continuity," the invite also stated.
Trendy indie kids gathered at dive bar Dirt at 4:30 p.m. to find the producers a bit tardy to the party. Lamented one conflicted hipster on the event's Facebook wall, "was there at 4:30 pm with beer and cute outfit..they were still setting up at 6:43 when we left." Added Christina Arce, "Show up now! Where the hell are all of you that are supposed to be 'attending'?!"
Despite the late start, the video's producers labeled the delayed shooting an enormous success ("That was FREAKING AMAZING!!!!!!!" wrote Rick Darge).
"It went really well," producer/director Mark Armes tells CultureMap, explaining that they continued filming until 1 a.m. and added poolside scenes later in the week, along with clips from Summer Fest. After the shoot at Dirt, about 200 people relocated to the Indiehouston House. The finished product will be released on the Internet in three weeks.
To date, Funwunce's production of "Home" has no affiliation with LCD Soundsystem. "This is something a lot of people are doing," explains Armes, "MTV doesn't play videos anymore. MGMT has some videos that they didn't actually produce themselves — the band can buy it from you."
When they got the idea, Armes & Co. began talks with LCD Soundsystem's management. "My friend was familiar with some people in that camp," says Armes. "They said, if you make a video, that's awesome. Go for it."
Incidentally, LCD Soundsystem tweeted on May 14: "NOT us making this! RT @audreyleon: Want to be in a @lcdsoundsytem video? You'll have to be in #Houston on 6/2."
Funwunce and RGD opted to shoot in Houston rather than LA in an effort to tap into this city's "scene" scene. "It was a collaboration between the two of us," says Armes, who attests to having built all of the video's props, including that beloved hipster icon, the robot.
