Apple Biters: Houston Symphony gets a Carnegie Hall return
The Houston Symphony, which brought its Planets — An HD Odyssey to Carnegie Hall earlier this year, is scheduled for an encore Carnegie performance in the 2012 Spring for Music Festival.
Houston's will be the first to symphony to perform in the festival, on May 7, 2012.
The programs for the six participating orchestras have not been announced, but promise to include works by five living composers as well as pieces such as Charles Ives’ Universe Symphony in the realization by Larry Austen, Martinů’s Symphony No. 1, the Busoni Piano Concerto, and Qugang Chen’s Iris dévoilée.
Such a trek is in line with new symphony CEO Mark Hanson's vision. He told CultureMap Editor-in-Chief Clifford Pugh in his first sit-down interview since assuming the position, "I'm a big believer in, whenever possible, visiting people in their own backyards. There may be people who will never venture down to Jones Hall. I don't want those people to never have the opportunity to hear the Houston Symphony. So we need to think perhaps more seriously of how we can get closer to them."
Hanson talked about wanting the world to see the quality of the Houston Symphony whenever possible as well.
