Not just Miss Michigan's moment
Topless tycoon triumph: Donald Trump & sexy lingerie the real Miss USA winners
Technically, Miss Michigan Rima Fakih — a 24-year-old Arab American brunette beauty — won the Miss USA Pageant tonight.
But that's not the real score. No, this year's Miss USA was dominated by a guy who is often accused of wearing a toupee. This was Donald Trump's moment long before Rima started blowing kisses from the Las Vegas stage.
Give Trump credit. He somehow made the Miss USA Pageant relevant again — probably drawing a pretty big rating, Survivor finale regardless. And Trump did it by turning to one of the oldest tricks in the book. He manufactured a controversy involving sex.
Or at least, sexy outfits.
Even Trump couldn't have imagined that the media would grab onto the Let's Pose the Miss USA contestants in Racy Lingerie Plan as readily as it did. Setting himself (or at least those strait-laced pageant officials) up to be viewed as a hypocrite — and ensuring debate over whether the official lingerie photos of this year's Miss USA contestants were more revealing than the unofficial ones that got last year's contestant Carrie Prejean into so much trouble — guaranteed worldwide headlines.
Who would have thought that such an obvious attention ploy would work?
That's why he's Trump.
I actually like Trump. When I was a golf writer, I had a number of conversations with the tycoon (he is at least as obsessed with golf as he is with having beautiful women all around him). When I wrote about how his Trump National LA course wasn't worthy of a spot among the Top 10 courses in California, his staff tracked me down at breakfast in Arizona and he challenged me to go out and play the course again.
The trip back didn't change my mind. Trump National LA still wasn't — and isn't today for that matter — one of the very best of the best courses in California. But it made for a good story.
Trump is used to getting his way. He surely did in the case of the Miss USA Pageant.
Only Trump could take co-ownership of this dying beauty contest and make it relevant again by going to a move straight out of his 1980s playbook.
