George Strait makes RodeoHouston history with special concert in 2013
If it seems like we should rename March as "RodeoHouston month," that's because the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo just keeps getting bigger than ever.
For 2013, organizers have announced that the event will add an extra day, extending from February 25 through March 17, making for a full three weeks of rodeo mania.
For the first time, the final day of the rodeo will not feature traditional roping and riding event, but instead have a special full-length concert starring George Strait, along with opening acts Martina McBride and the Randy Rogers Band. Other rodeo attractions — the carnival, shopping, food, livestock and horse show and other exhibitions — will all remain open for the March 17 event, with the concert tentatively scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
“George has had a lot of special moments in the 30 years since he first appeared at the Show,” chief operating officer of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Leroy Shafer said via press release. “I remember the day we flew him in as a replacement act an hour before his performance. He took the stage and quickly stole the hearts of our Rodeo fans. And, George has been here for all of the show’s major milestones since that first performance in 1983. We are extremely excited that he is going to close our 2013 Show with this special concert.”
With no rodeo events, Reliant will offer stadium floor level seating for the March 17 concert, with tickets starting at $150 and going on sale in January. Rodeo season ticket holders will have to purchase additional tickets for this special performance.
Other marquee concerts in the 2013 RodeoHouston schedule will be announced in December, and the full line-up will be released in January 2013.
