Avatar's Earth Day takeover: Sigourney opposes un-green boobs
Avatar, everybody's favorite remake (of FernGully or Dances with Wolves, take your pick) comes out on DVD on Earth Day (tomorrow).
The film has been noted for its environmental theme, and Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron are taking the exposure all the way to Washington. The Director and his frequent star spoke at a recent panel discussion alongside Pultizer prize-winning journalist Tom Friedman about climate change and the importance of effective energy policy. Apparently making a blockbuster film about the plight of tree-plugging natives on an alien planet makes you an authority on clean energy?
We had no idea.
In other Avatar news, Weaver has blasted the Academy Awards for Cameron's perceived Best Director snub. We get standing by your director, but Weaver was downright vitriolic in her dismissal of Kathryn Bigelow's critically acclaimedHurt Locker.
Weaver told a Brazilian news Web site: "Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason (he didn't win)." She even blamed Avatar's box-office success for Cameron's loss, continuing, "In the past, Avatar would have won because they (Oscar voters) loved to hand out awards to big productions, like Ben-Hur. Today it's fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw."
