Big News at the Opera Ball
Oscar Wyatt honors his wife, Lynn, with $1 million gift to Houston Grand Opera
Oilman Oscar Wyatt brought the house down at Wortham Theater Center Saturday night with the announcement at the Houston Grand Opera ball that he was donating $1 million to create the Lynn Wyatt Great Artists Fund.
As with all momentous performances at the Wortham, the unprecedented move in honor of his wife, the ball honoree, earned a standing ovation and cheers from the tony crowd.
It was just one of many firsts for the "Yellow Rose Ball" that saluted Lynn Wyatt for her long-time, glamour-infused support of the arts organization.
In another unprecedented show-stopper, world-renowned mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, here rehearsing for the upcoming production of Xerxes, performed two numbers in honor of Lynn Wyatt, "La Vie en Rose" and "Summertime." Graham was guest of ball chairs Denise Bush Bahr and Philip Bahr. (Read more about the ball and see photos of the dazzling white-tie-and-tails fashions on Monday.)
HGO CEO Anthony Freud made the announcement of the Wyatt gift while the Bahrs and the Wyatts took bows on the dance floor of the theater center's Grand Foyer. Oscar Wyatt, 85, continuing to recover from a stroke suffered more than a year ago, did remarkably well with only speech difficulties belying his health.
The stroke occurred shortly after he was released from federal custody in Beaumont, where he spent just under a year following a plea of guilty to making illegal payments for Iraqi oil under the United Nations' Oil-for-Food program. That unfortunate chapter seemed ancient history Saturday night as Wyatt, surrounded by his wife, his sons and grandchildren, basked in the glow of philanthropic zeal.
The $1 million gift, Freud said, provides an endowed fund to support HGO's tradition of bringing the best operatic talent to the city.
"I'm just so proud of you, honey," Lynn Wyatt said to Oscar before the sellout crowd of 580. "I just thank you for everything that you've done."
