Rockin' out Discovery Green
Best of the rest: The Hold Steady, Panic! at the Disco and Pat Green to rock TheBig Dance
Now that the headliners at The Big Dance Concert Series have gotten their due, news about the supporting acts has been released. You didn't think Kings of Leons were playing a five-hour set, did you? (That'd be a lot of "Use Somebody.") Luckily the the rest of the line-up is definitely worthy of attention.
On Friday the concert start at 4:45 p.m. with Houston ska/punk band Los Skarnales, which boasts a big energy and a large fan base in Mexico despite being relatively anonymous in Houston.
After a break for the "Naismith Preview Show," longtime indie rock mainstays The Hold Steady hit the stage at 7 p.m. before headliner Sublime with Rome at 9 p.m. The Hold Steady put the "rock" in indie rock, so I'd think they'd be a better fit opening for Kings of Leon, but I'm just glad to see a band that has genuine indie cred on the bill.
Saturday look out for invading hordes of teens as emo pop faves Panic! At The Disco hit the stage at 1:30 p.m. before Kings of Leon at 3. Will they wear their full suits, guyliner and cravats even if the temperature tops 80 degrees? There's only one way to find out.
A better bet is Austin rock band Vallejo at 11:30 a.m. and twangy funk troubadours Robert Randolph and the Family Band at 12:30 p.m.
With the addition of Texas country favorite Pat Green to the lineup on Sunday (he performs at 7 p.m.), many will consider the Green and headliner Kenny Chesney to be a double billing. (Attention non-Texans: Texans love us some Pat Green.) Unfortunately those who arrive early for a good spot to hear Green will be subjected to songs by Uncle Kracker, an uglier, less talented and less interesting imitation of Kid Rock. But Green and Chesney might be worth it.
