Global music academy School of Rock takes stage in the Heights with new locale
Attention aspiring rock stars: A global music school is opening a new locale in one of Houston's hottest neighborhoods. School of Rock, arguably the most recognizable commercial music school in the U.S. will open a new Heights outpost (742 E. 20th St.) on Saturday, December 3.
To celebrate, the Heights location will host a special opening event from 10 am-2 pm. Visitors can expect a ceremonial guitar smashing (for the uninitiated, that's School of Rock’s version of a ribbon-cutting), a live gig by the School of Rock - West University house band, an appearance by local artist Shelbi Nicole, a raffle, face painting, trial lessons, tours of the school, introductions to the music teachers, food, and more.
Made famous by the cult-favorite Jack Black film (which also spawned a musical and TV series) of the same name, School of Rock offers lessons in guitar, bass, piano, voice, and overall music. Students of all ages learn theory and techniques via songs from legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Lenny Kravitz, Led Zeppelin, and more.
Acquiring skills from a performance-based approach, many students and record deals and appearances on Broadway and TV competition shows such as American Idol and The Voice, press materials note. Currently, School of Rock boasts more than 300 locations worldwide.
Vivian and Hugh Scott are opening the new Heights locale after a successful launch of their popular West U location. “We are really excited to be able to bring School of Rock to this part of Houston. The Heights is a one-of-a-kind neighborhood with a rich history that retains an air of individuality that attracts foodies, creatives, and professionals,” Vivian noted in a statement. “School of Rock makes learning music fun with our performance-based curriculum and unique, patented teaching methodology. We want the student to build a lifelong passion for music and be a part of a great community at the same time. It's a place anyone can belong.”
This means Heights-area residents have yet another music school option. Those opting for a more indie approach can check out the Houston-based and family-owned Bojangles Music School, which also recently opened in the Heights.
