Black Friday camp out starts early: Family in search of best buys at Best Buy isready and waiting
Tent? Check. Bedding? Check. Lawn chairs and cooler? Double check.
No, this isn't a packing list for the annual Thanksgiving camping trip in the great outdoors — it's the Hermanez family's set-up outside of the Meyerland Best Buy, where they have been posted since Tuesday.
KHOU reports that the Black Friday stake-out has become a longstanding tradition for the family. The school-age kids sleep on the sidewalk at night and go to school during the day. Thanksgiving dinner gets delivered to them in line.
Among the items on their shopping list are a $200 laptop, a television, some electronics and video games for 11-year-old George. The family seems blissfully unaware that they're the only ones lined up.
The very store around which their holiday tradition centers is at stake this Black Friday, with more than $2 billion in outstanding debt and the accelerating decline of in-store sales.
Best Buy outlets across the United States know that they have the holidays to try to turn the profits around — and the Hermanez family will have some part in the recuperation.
