The Houston Chronicle reports that the jury in the legal battle over the $500 million estate of the late Alfred C. Glassell Jr. spent less than 40 minutes, including lunch, to deliver a verdict refuting Curry Glassell's claims that her father's last two wills were signed under the combined influences of dementia and Vinson & Elkins lawyers.
The court upheld Glassell's most recent 2003 will, executed by his son, Alfred Glassell III. Alfred Glassell III lost money personally in honoring the newest will, but won control of the family charitable foundation, which stands to gain around $200 million. Also supporting the 2003 will were Glassell's widow, Claire Atwell Glassell; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Glassell Family Foundation.
Curry Glassell, the mother of two boys, is worth an estimated $15 million, the Chron reports.
What remains unclear is how much money the lawyers will be getting.
Sources tell CultureMap that the legal bills are rumored to have reached $15 million for the two-week trial. This figure does not include the pre-trial work of the law firms involved — at least seven.
