Over the skate shop
Complaints about loud music at a Montrose party lead to fatal shooting: Mankilled at his door
A birthday party above a Montrose skate shop led to violence early Sunday morning, when an alleged argument over loud music ended in the shooting death of a 30-year-old man.
Trouble started around 2 a.m. in a four-unit apartment building at 2016 Dunlavy, where the Select skateboard store maintains a first-floor retail space.
Police found a Benjamin David Becke dead at his front door — the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the stomach.
Details of the event are sketchy at the moment, but an early account from KHOU Channel 11 has a downstairs tenant named Benjamin David Becke going upstairs to complain about a noisy party underway. As he returned to his apartment, a man from the upstairs unit followed with a gun and a verbal confrontation ensued on the porch.
"Some kind of verbal altercation happened and the male upstairs produced a weapon and ended up shooting," Houston Police Department homicide investigator John Villareal says. Police found Becke dead at the front door — the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the stomach.
The shooter, whose name has not been released, stayed at the scene until police arrived and was taken into custody for questioning. A Monday morning HPD statement says that the suspect has since been released without charges while a grand jury reviews the case.
