Pet of the Week
Meet Charlie, the amiable Aussie mix, CultureMap's pet of the week
Name: Charlie, as in stable genius Charlie Sheen, legendary actor Charlie Chaplin, country star Charlie Daniels, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, and the worst field goal kicker in football history, cartoon character Charlie Brown.
Birthdate: July 6, 2012. I'm just entering my salad years, but at 73 pounds, I'm embarrassed to say I don't have a salad figure. That reminds me of a joke by the wonderful Wendy Liebman. A few years ago, she was invited to her 40th kindergarten class reunion. She didn't go because she had gained, like, 100 pounds.
Ethnicity: I'm an Australian Shepherd mix. Confession, I may have been attending a few too many barbies. I need to drop a few pounds. There, I said it. That's the first step, right? So if you're looking for a dog who'll be up for long walks and lots of playing, I'm your boy.
I'm what you call a gentle giant. I love children, even the small'uns. I love playing and I know a bunch of commands, if you're into that sort of thing. I'm good on a leash, and I know how to use a dog door. You might want to butter the sides of the dog door until I get my weight down.
I was turned into the shelter because my former owners worked all day and the house was always empty. That's not a healthy idea for me, or any dog really.
And now an important, serious word: congrats and a tip of the Hatlo Hat to West Houston Subaru. Eight years ago, the car dealer took on Citizens for Animal Protection as a personal angel. They started helping by running half-price weekends and sponsoring all sorts of projects.
Ready for this? In eight years, West Houston Subaru has subsidized 10,477 adoptions. (On a personal note, I adopted my beautiful Sally last December 31 and got 50 percent off the fee, thanks to West Houston Subaru.) Now the dealer is donating a Subaru Forester Premium Edition to be raffled off at the CAP gala Nov. 16 at Royal Sonesta. Get more details here.
Come and get me: I'm available for adoption at 11 am Friday, October 4, at Citizens for Animal Protection (17555 Katy Freeway; 281-497-0591). Tell them, "Ken sent me."
