In no mood to party
It's the first anniversary of the drought that's crippling Texas: Less than 12inches of rain in a year
Tuesday marks the one year anniversary for our drought, according to a climatologist who has pinpointed Sept. 27, 2010, as the first day of Texas' water woes.
Don't take out the birthday candles just yet. This milestone certainly isn't one to celebrate, and we are still under a burn ban.
In 2011, Houston has seen less than one foot of rainfall (11.94 inches as of last Thursday, to be exact), compared to the average January through September total of approximately 40 inches. That accounts for a rainfall deficit of more than 28 inches since January 2011.
State climatologists foresee a dry weather pattern in Texas for a number of years — maybe more than a decade. I don't feel prepared to deal with this drought's terrible twos, much less a quinceañera.
This news doesn't bode well for our trees. Can you imagine Houston in the middle of a present-day Dust Bowl?
