Massive Slowdown
Another truck driver blunder throws Houston traffic into chaos: Concrete slabs fall free
Southbound traffic at the West Loop is even more of a mess than usual this Friday after an 18-wheeler partially overturned on the ramp to the Southwest Freeway northbound around 6:30 a.m., triggering closures and cleanups that stretched into the afternoon.
The truck lost its load — which apparently consisted of large slabs of concrete — and caused a massive slowdown during the morning commute and heavy delays straight through the lunch hour and beyond.
The Hwy. 59 southbound main lanes were closed between Newcastle and Chimney Rock for several hours while the load was retrieved. (TxDOT tweeted that they could possibly be closed again.)
KHOU notes that all traffic on the northbound ramp was forced to the southbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway while crews worked to make temporary repairs to the ramp's concrete barrier, which was damaged in the accident. Drivers were encouraged to reroute to downtown by making a U-turn at Chimney Rock.
The ramp is expected to reopen in time for the 5 o'clock rush hour, according to KHOU.
This is the second time in two weeks that a massive truck overturning has thrown Houston traffic into chaos.
