May 16 at earliest
Wait continues for Gabrielle Giffords: Shuttle launch pushed back at least 10more days
Houston-based astronaut Mark Kelly will have to continue to wait for his space moment.
NASA announced via Twitter (how else does anyone do it these days?) Friday afternoon that the earliest the space shuttle Endeavour will launch now is Monday, May 16 at 7:56 a.m. CST.
The current plan still calls for Gabrielle Giffords' — Kelly's wife — to leave Houston, where she is rehabing at TIRR, and make another trip to Cape Canaveral for the next launch attempt. Giffords was in Florida for last Friday's scheduled launch before it was called off because of an equipment malfunction.
NASA officials need more time to test the replaced failed switch box that controls the heating on a crucial hydraulic system fuel line.
"This weekend, technicians will continue to repair and retest electrical circuitry that caused a postponement of Endeavour's April 29 launch attempt," NASA said in a press release.
On Monday, NASA officials will hold a news conference to update the progress of that work and give a better idea of whether even May 16 is a realistic possibility.
