Why not spend the Kentucky Derby with Molly Hatchet: That's Lookin at Lucky
At Sam Houston Race Park today, you can be “Flirtin' With Disaster” after Lookin at Lucky. And no, we’re not talking about how you wager on the Run for the Roses.
To celebrate the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby — and, of course, to pry folks away from favorite sports bars and comfortable living rooms on Derby Day — Sam Houston's Big Kahunas have prepared a program that gallops the gamut from quarter horse racing to Southern Rock jamming.
Live racing will begin at 1 p.m, but that’s only one aspect of the Saturday extravaganza at Sam Houston. The Park will conduct between-race giveaways, offer signature mint juleps in commemorative Kentucky Derby glasses, and host a Derby-themed Hat Contest. Registration for the latter will begin on site at noon, with judging set to start at 3 p.m.
After the requisite simulcast of the Derby itself — for which Lookin at Lucky still is touted as an odds-on favorite, despite drawing the dreaded rail position — Sam Houston will kick off its Verizon Wireless Summer Concert Series on the Bud Light stage with a double-barrel blast from the ‘70s FM radio past: Molly Hatchet (famed for “Flirtin’ With Disaster”) and The Marshall Tucker Band (“Heard It in a Love Song”).
Speaking of concerts: There’s more oldies-but-goodies action in store later this summer at the track.
Brit blues-rockers Foghat will share the bill with Blue Oyster Cult (who, last time we checked, still don’t fear the Reaper) May 29. And those disco darlings known as The Village People will be camping and scampering on the Bud Light stage June 12.
