Sweat it Out
Straight shot to Glenwood Cemetery: Happy trails ahead for Memorial Drive
America's sixth fattest city is about to get a bit trimmer. Those with a careful eye for construction have noticed new trails underway along the north side of Memorial Drive.
Intermittent trails have always existed along the north side of the water, but the new path is paved and is further offset from the waterway. Spanning from Glenwood Cemetery west to Shepherd Drive, the route will connect at its center with the bayou's third pedestrian crossing, The Bridge Formerly Known as Tolerance (now the bland Rosemont Bridge).
A March 11 statement by Houston Parks & Recreation indicated that the new trails will run from Sabine Street Bridge to Spotts Park, but the construction grounds along Memorial attest to a path reaching as far west as the Shepherd overpass. And that's all the better for Houstonians, especially for those located nearby in the increasingly dense Washington Avenue corridor.
"We'll be here for about 11 more months," stated a construction worker laying concrete under the Studemont Street bridge.
As opposed to the at-grade bayou trails, the new, higher elevation greenways provide breathtaking views of the skyline. And since the trails are being laid out in smooth cement rather than dirt, the construction is also a coup for inline skaters.
