Parking Predicaments
A Facebook Poke for preservation: But will parking doom the Alabama?
It's the era of social media, and it looks like the voices of nearly 3,000 Facbeook fans are being heard on the Alabama Theater.
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Alamo Drafthouse has reopened discussions with Weingarten Realty about leasing the vacant art-deco Alabama. Alamo officials actually first pitched this idea to Weingarten six months ago — long before the architectural plans to demolish the interior of the Alabama became public.
The decision to reopen negotiations is due in large part to the recent swell of public support for the idea of Alabama being used as it was originally intended.
Parking may be a big potential issue, and we've even heard rumors that per an agreement with other tenants in the shopping center, the space is prohibited from ever housing another theater. Weingarten declined to comment on this through a spokesperson, telling CultureMap that it is against company policy to discuss such matters.
If Alamo is a no-go, what are some of your other ideas for preserving the Alabama?
