In Great Spirits
Former first lady Barbara Bush spends New Year's Eve in the hospital
Former first lady Barbara Bush is resting comfortably at Houston Methodist Hospital after she was admitted Tuesday for a "respiratory-related issue," Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in a written statement.
"She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care," McGrath said. "Updates will be issued when warranted."
Bush and her husband, former president George H.W. Bush, spent New Year's Eve together at the hospital, where they watched their favorite college football team, the Texas A&M Aggies, narrowly defeat the Duke University Blue Devils 52-48 in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta, the New York Times reported.
Mrs. Bush, 88, was admitted to the same hospital in 2010 for a mystery illness. She also had open heart surgery at Methodist in 2009 and surgery for a perforated ulcer in November 2008.
The former president, 89, spent Christmas 2012 and New Year's 2013 in the same hospital and was there several weeks for treatment of a bronchitis-related illness.
