Menil Collection plans 25th anniversary celebration with music giants Yo-Yo Ma &Philip Glass
With its official list of 25th anniversary events arriving in mailboxes this week, the Menil Collection has flooded the arts calendar with an impressive line-up of public events, exhibitions and galas. But the inclusion of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and composer Philip Glass has Houston music fans chomping at the bit.
Both musicians have made regular stops in the Bayou City throughout their careers, with Glass performing at the then-new Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston in the early 1970s and Yo-Yo Ma joining the Houston Symphony on numerous occasions in the past two decades.
Rarely will listeners be able to enjoy the two in such intimate settings.
Rarely, though, will listeners be able to enjoy the two in such intimate settings.
On Sept. 11, Yo-Yo Ma will play before a small crowd inside the museum itself during a black-tie Menil benefit. Though tickets ran at two substantial price points — $1,000 and $2,500 — the unique performance has long been sold out.
Luckily, tickets are still available for Glass' public concert on Dec. 2, which will take place at noon inside a special tent set up for a string of Menil galas just outside the original Renzo Piano building.
In honor of its silver anniversary, the museum commissioned Glass to create one of his etudes, short study pieces the musician has been writing since the mid-1990s to explore new piano techniques. The 17th in a series of 20 works a new volume of etudes, the Menil commission will be performed by the artist for free, but tickets will be required for the small concert space.
