A little night music, fine wines and divine cuisine inspire the Houston SymphonyMaestro's Wine Dinner
What's not to love about the Houston Symphony Maestro's Wine Dinner? The intimate evening on stage at Jones Hall, complete with gourmet fare paired with commendable wines and hosted by music director and wine aficionado Hans Graf, is an easy sellout each spring. And Sunday night's dinner followed tradition.
The bonus this year for the 220 guests was the brief pre-dinner concert by two-time winner of the Ima Hogg Competition Audience Favorite Jeewon Lee. The candlelit evening benefits that annual young musicians competition sponsored by the symphony.
Guests' appetites for the tasty wines that would be served with the five-course dinner from Jackson & Co. were whetted by the vast silent auction of wines. Dr. Tom Nichols and Robert Sakowitz corralled an enticing auction selection that featured offerings such as a magnum of 1986 Chateau Lafite Rothschild and a horizontal selection of 1964 wines including Chateau Latour and Chateau Leoville Poyferre.
Lindy and John Rydman of Spec's Wines, Sprits and Fine Foods selected the wine pairings for the dinner with bottles coming from Fisher Vineyards and Freeman Vineyards.
Melissa and Michael Mithoff chaired the evening with assistance from the underwriting committee comprised of Nancy and Erik Littlejohn, Joella and Steve Mach, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor, Betty and Jess Tutor and Tara and David Wuthrich.
Among those swooning over Jackson Hicks' filet mignon a la Stroganoff and the chocolate decadence dessert were Julia and Russell Frankel, Sherry and Jim Smith, Caroline and Gary Kenney, Darlene and Cappy Bisso, Margaret Alkek Williams and Jim Daniel, Francoise and Edward Djerejian, Beth Madison, Susan and Dr. Richard Stasney and Houston Symphony CEO Mark Hanson.
