    Welcome Forty Five Ten

High-fashion Dallas boutique celebrates expansion to Houston with a big party

    Dec 7, 2016 | 10:10 am

What: Opening of Forty Five Ten.

    Where: River Oaks District.

The scoop: The chic Dallas store that is a favorite of the fashion world celebrated the opening of a new 3,300-square-foot Houston boutique with a big party that drew much of the city's stylish trendsetters. Forty Five Ten's president and co-founder Brian Bolke, along with women's fashion director Tomasi Hill and men's fashion director Nick Wooster, welcomed the Houston crowd, while artist Donald Robertson, who has been labeled "Instagram's Andy Warhol," sketched his cheeky illustrations on candles from The Starling Project, available exclusively at the store. Proceeds go to UNICEF to provide sustainable solar energy to communities in need around the world.

A large red balloon sculpture in the shape of a pair of lips hovered above the central part of the store, which seems as tall as it is wide. The ultra-modern boutique, designed by Dallas architect David Droese, who attended the opening with his wife, Dallas publicist Suzanne Droese, has a clean look, with cubicles and cubbyholes featuring luxe womenswear and accessories, menswear, a gift and home department, an Assouline book department, and a room featuring Forty Five Ten’s exclusive Rare Beauty concept.

Upon entering the store, guests were offered flutes of Casa Dragones Joven, a limited-edition sipping tequila, while waiters passed hors d'oeuvres by Lombardi Family Concepts. Owner Alberto Lombardi was in from Dallas to oversee the operation, as his Taverna restaurant is directly across the street from Forty Five Ten in the luxe Houston shopping center, and Toulouse is close by.

Dallas DJ Lucy Wrubel, looking like a pink lady in Grease, kept the energy level high with an array of tunes.

Who: The crowd was a mix of seasoned Houston fashion vets and up-and comers. Among those spotted were Sarah Jawda and Saba Jawda, Vivian Wise, Beth Muecke, Chiara Casiraghi-Brody, Courtney Hopson, Becca Cason Thrash, Diane Lokey Farb, Judy Nyquist, Sverre and Carrie Brandberg Dahl, Fady Armanious, Lilly Cullen, Erica Dixon, Caroline Starry LeBlanc, Ceron, and Susie Criner and Annie Criner.

In a city that knows good food and good hearts, the Houston Food Bank’s 25th Annual Chefs’ Dinner proved that the two pair perfectly. Held on May 6 at the Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District, this year’s silver-anniversary soirée brought together a stylish crowd of philanthropists, food lovers, and culinary icons for an unforgettable night of fine dining.

The annual benefit raised $520,000, enough to provide 1.56 million meals to individuals and families across the food bank’s 8-county service area.

    That’s not just dinner — it’s a lifeline.

Guests indulged in a five-course wine dinner crafted by a dream team of Houston chefs. Hugo Ortega of H Town Restaurant Group brought his James Beard-winning magic to the mix, joined by Marcos Juarez of Hidden Omakase and Austin Simmons, Brandon Wilhelm of Hotel ZaZa, Evelyn Garcia of Jūn and Kin HTX, and a tag-team effort from Marie Riddle and Aaron Bludorn of Bludorn. With talent like that in the kitchen, attendees knew they were in for a culinary experience.

In addition to the gastronomic glam, the night served up heartfelt honors.

The Keegan Family received the Barbara Falik Humanitarian Award, a touching tribute to their longtime commitment to hunger relief—an effort deeply inspired by the late Mary Barden Keegan, whose legacy continues to nourish the mission of the Houston Food Bank. The event also paid tribute to Jim Mills, co-founder of the chefs’ dinner, recognizing his vision and dedication in helping this now-beloved event reach its 25-year milestone.

Barbara and Steve Retzloff served as event chairs with support of a host committee composed of Jennifer and Tadd Tellepsen, Marci Rosenberg and Ben Samuels, Melissa and Bob Duran, Teresa and Jose Ivo, Jeff and Michelle Dodson, Holly and Jim Baker, Lee and Virginia Lahourcade, and Doe and Henry Florsheim. Among those in the crowd were Colleen and Michael B. Keegan, and Councilmember Twila Carter.
