Young professionals party at an adult carnival: A clown and beer set a unique mood

Joel Luks

Oct 30, 2013 | 10:57 am

A cloudless sky as big as Texas, gentle autumnal breezes and ever flowing suds on tap. The elements — and yes, that includes the beer — couldn't have been any more perfect for the good-natured ensemble of 150 young professionals that gathered at Jackson's Watering Hole recently.

Friends of DePelchin Children's Center bedecked the ice house with brightly colored trimmings to bring to mind a fall carnival ambiance complete with Twilight Your Clown, a balloon artist who crafted flowers, hats and cutesy accessories worn by guests throughout the evening.

While the generous spread of finger foods courtesy of Kroger, La Madeleine and Bowl and a silent auction that included sports packages donated by the Houston Dynamo, a wine basket from Houston Wine Merchant and a beauty bundle from Craft Salon and Style Bar kept the genial throng in good spirits, board chair Eliza Wright and chair-elect Jessica Gonzalez seized the opportunity to collect household contributions for DePelchin's new Transitional Living Program, a recently launched initiative that supports young adults ages 18 to 22 who have aged out of the foster care system.

Items such as sheets, comforters, pillows, towels, storage drawers and hangers can be dropped off by appointment at DePelchin Children's Center through Nov. 22.

Unwinding with advancement coordinator Julia S. Taliaferro and public relations manager Analisa Warren were Sarah and Josh Fischer, Wesley Wilder, Mandi Lewis, Shea Jeffring, Rebecca Cantu and Tala Hariri, Dr. Amit Mehta, Allyson Clifton, Allie and Eric Danziger, Mike Collier, Katie Chachere, Marc Eichenbaum, Doug Steimle, Orel Shoham and Lee Mimms.

Clever new Houston-based food-finding app blends Yelp and Instagram for hungry users

The Gradi App's platform is like Yelp meets Instagram, and users can even receive compensation for their content.

When the Houston restaurant industry was in its biggest time of need, two Houstonians stepped up to the plate to deliver a tech tool for the community.

Amid the pandemic, restaurants increasingly rolled out QR code menus to decrease the risk of spreading of germs by eliminating touching physical menus. Houstonians Zachary Dowthitt and Eric Hairston launched Gradi App in February 2021 to help both restaurants and guests access QR Code menus with more ease.

Now, the duo has launched a new approach for its app. The Gradi App, which can be found on the Apple App Store, has branched out to deliver an updated consumer-based model to help Houstonians discover food and drink options from the city’s diverse palate of dining.

Users of the consumer Gradi App can search through photos of menu items to find the best local spots for drinks and food due to proximity and preference. Think Yelp meets Instagram. The app even has an option to book a ride share from Lyft or Uber to the destinations.

“We noticed from menus at restaurants, people are posting their food photos all the time, but menus still don’t have photos" Dowthitt tells InnovationMap. "So, we asked ourselves ‘when was the last time you bought something without seeing it?’ Most people do it at restaurants every day.”

Some of Houston’s most popular spots — Frank’s Pizza, Henke & Pilot, Bovine & Barley, and others — have already been spotlighted on Gradi. Currently, the app has 32 restaurant partners and over 350,000 users.

Dowthitt says he is already thinking of future versions of the app. Users will be able to locate favorite spots, share menus with your friends, search food by items, and post their own photos from each restaurant on the app. Photos will be graded on the app by users, and users can even be compensated for their posts. The most-liked photo for each item will be chosen as the featured photo for each restaurant on the app, and users who take these photos will get compensated for their unique content.

Gradi App hopes to have its updated consumer version of the app with search and linked menu options out by December 7. Dowthitt says hee has plans to deliver an upgraded nightlife and happy hour version in the future.

“We’ve eaten with our eyes from the beginning of time,” Dowthitt said. “And we believe in the future, you will see what you order (food or drinks) before you order it…and that is where we come into play.”

Houston Astros pitcher ties the knot with longtime partner in post-World Series wedding

Ryne Stanek and Jessica Peet have officially wed.

Houston Astros bullpen presence Ryne Stanek is living his best life. The 'Stros reliever/World Series champ just showed off his fielding prowess during the massive downtown victory parade, when a fan hurled a beer to him. The six-foot-four Stanek grabbed the brew, opened it, downed it, and slammed it down on the team float.

Stanek's fianceé Jessica Peet captured the moment on social media — noting that she was the designated driver.

— J E S S (@_jessicastanek_) November 7, 2022

Now, Stanek can add another unforgettable experience to his impressive list: wedding his beloved partner. He and Peet wed on November 12 in Bushnell, Florida. Their site on The Knot reveals some charming photos.

The happy couple were joined in Florida by Astros ace Lance McCullers, Jr. and wife Kara, as well as pitcher Ryan Pressly and wife Kat.

An Instagram fan favorite for their adorable photos, Ryne and Jess announced their engagement in March 2021. They are parents to a cherubic daughter, Joelle Layne.

This latest 'Stros news comes in a furious post-title season for the team. Team stars José Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Ryan Tucker met hundreds of fans last week at Academy Sports and Outdoors appearances. Slugger/playoff powerhouse Bregman also rocked the red carpet with dazzling wife Reagan at the CMA Awards.

And on November 14, as our news partner ABC13 reports, shortstop sensation and World Series MVP Jeremy Peña greeted lines of fans when he worked a drive-thru shift at a local Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers location.

Hot Heights Thai restaurant's owner set to open luxurious, artful new eatery in River Oaks

Lukkaew Srasrisuwan will open MaKiin next year.

The owner of a popular Thai restaurant will soon add a second concept to her roster. Kin Dee co-owner Lukkaew Srasrisuwan will open MaKiin next spring.

Located on the first floor of the Hanover River Oaks luxury high-rise, MaKiin will offer a more upscale experience than Kin Dee, which opened in the Heights in 2020.

Details on what exactly that means are still being worked out, but diners can expect a more luxurious environment and different dishes than Srasrisuwan’s first restaurant. Notably, Kin Dee chef Miranda Loetkhamfu is not involved in the project.

Named after a Thai phrase that translates as “come to eat,” MaKiin aims to offer a high level of hospitality. It will draw upon Srasrisuwan’s family history operating luxurious hotels, including the Khanom Golden Beach.

“I want to continue to share my love for authentic Thai cuisine with Houstonians, and am excited about the opportunity to bring a new concept to the dynamic Kirby corridor,” Srasrisuwan said in a statement. “With Kin Dee we showed Houstonians Thai food can be fun and vibrant. MaKiin will deliver a more elevated experience that will celebrate the artistry of my homeland’s authentic flavors, ingredients, and techniques.”

MaKiin will join other new arrivals in Upper Kirby such as Lulu’s, an Italian restaurants from Armandos owners Cinda and Armando Palacios that opened last year. Se7en, an ambitious, vibe dining concept, will open later this year in the Kirby Collection mixed-use development.
