Legacy trades a luncheon for a cocktail party fundraiser in winning switcheroo
What: 15th annual Legacy Luncheon Cocktail Party.
Where: Home of Elizabeth and Gary Petersen.
The scoop: Every fall, Legacy Community Health ushers in the social season with a fundraiser luncheon in the lobby of the Wortham Theater Center. But since Hurricane Harvey floodwaters forced the Wortham to close until at least May, 2018, organizers decided to throw a cocktail party instead.
More than 250 guests gathered at the River Oaks home of Elizabeth and Gary Petersen for the party, which honored retailers Shannon Hall and Marcus Sloan for their contributions to the organization that provides a variety of health services to those in need. Elizabeth also served as co-host, with Melissa Mithoff and Katherine Murphy.
The party raised more than $300,000 to benefit Legacy's Little Readers Program, presented by H-E-B, which provides children's books to the organization's young clients. Since its inception in 2015, more than 47,000 books have been distributed. Gary Petersen announced that a Little Readers Corner will be dedicated in honor of Hall and Sloan at the new Legacy Southwest Clinic and the crowd spontaneously chipped in $70,000 in donations in a spirited "paddles up" display.
Who: Joining in the celebration were Vivian Wise, Dr. Yvonne and Rufus Cormier, Tiffany Smith, Michael Mithoff, Legacy executive director Katy Caldwell and director of development Chree Boydstun, Neal Hamil, Milton Townsend, Don Mafridge, Dr. Devinder and Gina Bhatia, Bill Baldwin and Fady Armanious, Tony Bravo, Bob and Gracie Cavnar, Monsour Taghdisi, Rudyand Debbie Festari, Ceron and Todd Fiscus, Diane Lokey Farb, Courtney Hopson, and Houston "flood czar" Stephen Costello, who presented Hall and Sloan with a proclamation from the city.
