The Scoop: When guests saw the invitation to the '40s themed gala, they really got in the the mood with a variety of styles reminscent of that long-ago World War II era. Honoree Sybil Roos, who served as as a WAVE in the United States Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve), duplicated her uniform, courtesy of Saks Fifth Avenue. Her daughter, Betsy Garlinger, dressed as Rosie the Riveter and won an award in the evening's costume contest. Other winners included Kim Moody and "General Patton" Dan Moody in full dress military uniforms. Chairs Mary Ann and David McKeithan and Kathi and Bill Rovere, along with honorees Samantha Kennedy and Julie Pitts, were all styled as '40s-era Hollywood movie stars.
The Richard Brown Orchestra (aka The Glenn Miller Band) donned military uniforms and kept the "joint jumpin'" with '40s standards while dancers demonstrated the jitterbug, swing and tap dances. Best Dancer trophies went to longtime Mission board member Mel Keike and Linda Lorelle.
The menu also flashed back with such favorites as fried chicken, meatloaf, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, wedge lettuce salad, lime Jell-o salad, standing rib roast, ham, biscuits and cornbread, with a surprise dessert — Coke Floats with brownies and apple pie — served tableside.
And surprise celebrity guest star Marie Bosarge channeled Marilyn Monroe with a rendition of "Diamond are a Girl's Best Friend" from Gentleman Prefer Blonds, which premiered on Broadway in 1949.
The eighth annual gala raised more than $350,000 to support the nonprofit's mission of providing safe haven for homeless women and children as well as food, clothing, job training, child care and spiritual guidance.
