MFAH heavy hitters enjoy a luxury evening — and get a sneak peek at innovative new exhibit
History buffs and fine art patrons found common ground at the VIP preview of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's American Adversaries: West and Copley in a Transatlantic World. The coterie of 80 museum trustees, lenders and guests perused the exhibition of 18th century works by Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley, colonial American innovators who gave initiated the genre of contemporary history painting.
While the exhibition opens to the public on Sunday, this special evening enjoyed all the elements of sophisticated launch. The Apollo Chamber Players provided music. In Bloom delivered the colorful florals and City Kitchen presented a sophisticated seasonal dinner menu.
After the cocktail reception for viewing the paintings in the Brown Foundation Galleries, guests moved to the McNair Gallery for dinner. The welcome by museum board chairman Rich Kinder was followed by remarks by museum director Gary Tinterow and curator of American Painting and Sculpture Emily Ballew Neff.
Among museum supporters were Sara and Bill Morgan, Nancy Kinder, Margaret Alkek Williams and Jim Daniel, Jeanie Kilroy Wilson and Wally Wilson, Ann and John Bookout, Windi and David Grimes, Carla Knobloch, Cornelia and Meredith Long and Ann Trammell.
