Ronald McDonald House gets a major $22.5 million upgrade and expansion
Ronald McDonald House Houston is getting a mega upgrade. The $22.5 million revamp of the organization's Holcombe House, which was celebrated at a recent groundbreaking ceremony, includes much-needed renovations of 50 private bedrooms in the facility as well as a 20-bedroom expansion.
Construction for Phase I and II of the three-phase project, designed by Dewberry and Wilson Architects, began in June and is expected be completed with a year to 15 months.
Phase I boasts a new two-story tower that will increase Holcombe House’s capacity by 40 percent. Phase II features a revamp of the first floor and atrium, upgrades to the kitchen and common areas, and the creation of an additional space to serve meals to families and their guests.
Phase III, which will begin when fundraising goals are met, includes refurbishing existing bedrooms and bathrooms to maximize space.
Funds will come from the organization's Behind Every Door capital campaign, which launched in 2015. More than $18 million has been raised in the capital campaign thus far.
Holcombe House has been used by nearly 600 families a year for two decades, officials said.
“To date, Holcombe House operates consistently at full capacity, which means that, sadly, we are unable to provide services for 12-15 families in need each day,” Rick Noriega, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Houston, said in a press release. “We are thrilled that this project will allow us to keep more families close to their sick child when it matters most.”
Ronald McDonald House Houston is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe, comfortable, affordable place to live for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment in the Texas Medical Center.
