Grocery war Sprouts in Houston: "Less expensive Whole Foods" makes a move into the Loop

    Clifford Pugh
    Aug 27, 2013 | 7:11 am

Sprouts Farmers Market, the Phoenix-based natural foods store that a friend of mine calls a "less expensive Whole Foods," is continuing its Houston expansion with its first inside-the-Loop location.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the chain will occupy around 28,000 square feet in a new shopping center on the former site of San Jacinto Stone at the southwest corner of I-10 and Yale. The shopping center, called Yale Street Market, will also include an LA Fitness and Guitar Center. It is located next to the Walmart center in the Heights area.

Sprouts currently has four locations in suburban Houston, including Katy, Copperfield, Cypress and west Houston.

Last summer the owners of San Jacinto Stone sold the eight-acre property, where it had operated for 68 years, to Ponderosa Land Development and moved to the southwest corner of Westpark and 610 in Bellaire.

The Heights-area Sprouts Farmers Market will be the chain's fifth supermarket in the Houston environs.

Define Living: Park Row breaks ground in the Energy Corridor later this year

There’s a new apartment option coming to Houston’s bustling Energy Corridor.

Houston-based Define Living, a self-described wellness-centered multifamily brand, is creating Define Living: Park Row. The new apartment complex will be located on 10.4 acres along Park Row Blvd near I-10 and Central Park West Blvd. The multifamily complex is Define’s second residential community in the city. Groundbreaking should come in late 2025.

Mucasey & Associates is the architect for the property, while Blazer Building will oversee construction. Pre-leasing is already underway. It’s estimated that the complex’s on-site clubhouse will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026, with the residential buildings scheduled to follow suit.

The mid-rise, four-story community will have 388 one- and two-bedroom apartment units ranging from 657 square feet to 1,089 square feet. The apartment homes will feature gourmet kitchens with stainless steel appliances, in-unit washers and dryers, walk-in closets, private patios, modern interiors, and a range of price points.

Define Living: Park Row breaks ground in the Energy Corridor later this year

Define has staked its claim in Houston’s housing scene by making healthy living a way of life at its properties. Residents of the Park Row property will have access to fitness classes, indoor cycling and yoga studios, a state-of-the-art fitness center, infrared sauna and cold plunge, resort-style lap pool, two pickleball courts, a dog park and other pet-friendly features, bicycle spa, fresh juice for post-workout recovery, direct access to scenic walking and biking trails, and a personal wellbeing coach for every resident.

The land surrounding the new complex already lends itself to an active lifestyle. It's close to both the Addicks Reservoir and Terry Hershey Park and will be connected to the Bayou Greenways’ miles of hike and bike trails.

Define Living purchased the land for the new complex from Houston-based Wolff Companies. Wolff’s executive vice president, Carolyn Wolff Doros, said, “Wolff Companies has a long history of creating spaces in the Energy Corridor that enhance the lives of those who live, work, and play there. We see working with Define Living to bring their vision of a healthy residential community to life as the next step in that legacy.”

Define Living: Park Row comes following the success of the company’s flagship community, 1888 Brittmoore. Like its predecessor, the Park Row location will blend convenience, modern design, and holistic living in one complex.

“We believe your home should energize and restore you,” said Henry Richardson, founder of Define Living. “We designed Define Living: Park Row for people who want more than just a place to live—they want a place to thrive.”
