This fall Houston institution Three Brothers Bakery will open a third location on Washington Ave. Although owner Bobby Jucker declined to specify the exact location, CultureMap has learned that Three Brothers is moving into the former District Lounge space.

As with the location the company opened last year near Memorial City Mall, the new spot will have a strong cafe component with an upscale interior treatment that includes both indoor seating and, for the first time, a large outdoor patio. The targeted opening day is Nov. 1.

"Memorial has done very well," Jucker tells CultureMap. "We have a good team, and we decided we can open another location. We hope it's the first of many."

Jucker says he chose this location because of its proximity to both The Heights and River Oaks. Three Brothers previously operated a small bakery in the River Oaks Shopping Center at West Gray and Shepherd, and this new location should help them recapture those customers.

To do that, Jucker says the new location will feature "a coffee bar with adult type beverages," an open kitchen and a dog-friendly patio with Three Brothers dog treats. There will be new bakery items, including fudge.

"We're doing things we've been reluctant to do (previously)," Jucker explains. One of which is staying open later to capture the Washington Ave. crowd.

As for the interior, Jucker predicts that "if you think the Memorial store is nice, wait until you see the new one." That's all part of the plan to compete in Houston's crowded market. "We know the competition is fierce. We can't sit around on our laurels."

However, "Quality remains number one. We're not a trendy type of bakery. We do things the way we've done them for 64 years."

In less than three months, diners can have dinner at Beaver's and follow it with a hamentaschen and coffee at Three Brothers. Sure, why not?
