It was Bad Pants Day at Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women as a bevy of good-natured Houston media personalities in eye-catching scrubs accessorized in a special way delighted — or maybe frightened? — a select audience. TCH patients designed the scrubs for the mid-day kickoff party, heralding the Bad Pants Open Golf Tournament on October 22 at the Clubs of Kingwood.
The annual golf tournament benefits the Texas Children's Newborn Center.
Fox 26 Morning News co-anchor Melissa Wilson took top honors in a pair of dinosaur-themed pants, which she accessorized with a necklace of tiny dino figures that she borrowed from her son's array of figures. KTRK meterologist Casey Curry was voted second by her Bad Pants media peers for in a pair of animal print scrubs, which she accessorized with a bright green T-shirt, while yours truly took third in a pair of scrubs adorned with colorful feathers, accessorized with a white tux shirt and untied red tie because it's always fun to dress formal.
Other colorfully-dressed media personalities were KHOU meterologist Chita Johnson, Houston Chronicle society columnist Amber Elliott and KTRK morning news anchor Tom Koch, who outshone all others in the accessories department with a fishing vest, pole and net to accent his nautical-themed pants.
Among the participating nurses, physicians and staff in the Texas Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Suwanna Rubio took top honors in bad pants adorned with dozens of figures, ranging from a green frog to painted figurine key chains from her native Thailand, with Heather Cherry in second place and Dr. Gautham Suresh in third. All winners received an artistic plate painted by TCH patients.
Other NICU staff members appeared in pants adorned with Houston Texans logo, Mardi Gras beads, peace signs and flowers.
The lively event took on a serious tone when Samantha and Brian Brantley, parents of Newborn Center graduates J.J. and Colin, shared the story of their time spent in the NICU after their twin boys were born at 32 weeks. Both boys were in a rambunctious mood at the party, which includes a kid's-size putt putt course.
Since the Bad Pants tournament was founded 18 years ago, it has raised over $4 million for the Newborn Center.
