Swim, fish and boat in the city: $4.2 million home comes with a backyard lake

Editor's Note: Houston, the surrounding areas and beyond are loaded with must-have houses for sale in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. In this continuing series, CultureMap snoops through some of the best and gives you the lowdown on what's hot on the market.

Swim, fish and boat right in your own back yard in this custom home nestled next to one of three spring-fed private lakes in the Sandalwood subdivision — all for $4.2 million.

    Walk through
Located in the heart of the Memorial area, the house at 30 Robinlake Lane sits on a half-acre lot at the end of a cul-de-sac. The dining room overlooks the front yard through a wall of tall windows, and the living room boasts a two-story, wood-clad ceiling with beams and trusses. A fireplace with limestone surround serves as a focal point. In fact, Austin limestone is found throughout the residence as columns and even walls.

The family room, designed at the back of the house with views of the lake, is open to the breakfast area and kitchen. The family room limestone fireplace is flanked by built-in entertainment cabinets made of wood from vertical grain fir beams from a 1900 apple warehouse in Washington. The kitchen breakfast bar features a foot rest repurposed from an old Katy Rail railroad track. Custom metalwork Texas stars shine at various locations inside and out.

The spacious kitchen offers furniture-quality cabinetry and natural stone backsplash along with state-of-the-art cooking appliances, such as full-sized SubZero refrigerator and freezer and Viking gas stove. Expansive granite countertops afford plenty of space for food preparation.

The master bedroom on the first floor has floor-to-ceiling windows providing lake vistas, cherry hardwood floors and vaulted ceiling, as well as a glass door for access to the terrace and pool. The master bath is flooded with natural light from high wall windows and includes a natural stone floor, built-in vanity and separate showers and sinks. Also on the first floor is a guest bedroom with full bath, beadboard walls and cherry hardwood floors.

Upstairs are a study, media room and game room, where French doors open to a deck overlooking the back yard and lake. All five bedrooms are large with cherry hardwood floors and tall ceilings. Two bedrooms share a Jack-and-Jill bath. In total, the house includes four full and three half-baths.

    Step outside
Outdoor living comes naturally at 30 Robinlake Lane, with a huge flagstone patio in back plus swimming pool and multiple areas for relaxing and entertaining among the landscaped setting. The al fresco dining room and summer kitchen are covered by a wood-plank ceiling. In addition, owners bask in the park-like setting of Robin Lake, as well enjoy full access to water activities. The two-car garage is attached.

    Square footage: 6,930

    Asking price: $4.2 million

Chris Shepherd marked the opening of the Bosch/Thermador/Gaggenau Experience and Design Center (EDC) with a masterclass cooking session.

Post Oak Plaza's luxury retail lineup just added a new tenant with the opening of the Bosch/Thermador/Gaggenau Experience and Design Center (EDC). The state-of-the-art showroom is home to a wide range of premium home appliances by Bosch, Thermador, and Gaggenau including professional-grade cooking appliances.

James Beard Award-winning chef (and CultureMap wine columnist) Chris Shepherd made an appearance with a masterclass cooking session for a crowd of content creators and media during the grand opening event. At a separate event, Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta addressed developers, real estate, architecture, design, and culinary groups.

Inside the nearly 15,000-square-foot showroom, customers can expect to find dishwashers, ovens, ranges, cooktops, microwaves, ventilation, warming drawers, refrigerators, washers and dryers, and built-in and countertop coffee machines. The center also showcases complete kitchens that highlight both new and classic design trends. Hoping to lure in high-end shoppers, this interactive experience will also feature engaging displays, live demonstrations, and personalized design consultations.

"The new Houston BSH Experience and Design Center will elevate the luxury experience and create lasting relationships as a member of the community in this important region," said Thomas Staebler, Head of Experience & Design Centers, North America, for BSH Home Appliances in a statement. "This showroom will be a hub for both consumers and professionals to find inspiration, experience innovation and really experience our celebrated global brands in a way that allows guests to imagine Bosch, Thermador or Gaggenau weaved into their unique lifestyles."

BSH, the home appliance division of Germany's Bosch Group and company behind the EDC, hopes that the massive showroom will offer customers the opportunity to engage with the best products to match their lifestyle and design concepts. The Houston outpost is the latest in a string of EDC locations across North America including Irvine, Calif., Chicago, New York City, Miami, as well as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal in Canada.
