Million Dollar Winner
Lay’s has announced the winner of its “Do Us A Flavor” contest, which pitted three original flavors — cheesy garlic bread, sriracha and chicken and waffles — against one another for the right to join the company's permanent snack-chip lineup. Cheesy garlic bread, created by Wisconsin native Karen Weber-Mendham, beat them all.
As you may remember, because you’re all voracious chip eaters, we had a totally scientific taste test of the three flavors when they came out in February. Our findings were just a little different from the end results, as we generally considered sriracha to be the best, though it was all pretty relative.
One thing we could all agree on, however, was that we pretty much hated the cheesy garlic bread variety. As CultureMap Dallas food critic Teresa Gubbins put it, “Opening flavor was curdled milk with a hint of queso, verging on the flavor of vomit.” Delicious!
But more than a million votes were counted between February 12 and May 4, and most of those went to cheesy garlic bread. So what the hell do we know, right?
For her efforts, Weber-Mendham will receive $1 million or 1 percent of the chip’s sales in 2013, depending on which is higher. But do not cry for the runner-ups; they aren’t going home empty-handed.
Sriracha creator Tyler Raineri of Illinois and chicken-and-waffle mastermind Christina Abu-Judom of Arizona will both win a cool $50,000. Their chips will make a limited run this summer.
The cheesy garlic bread will stay on shelves for at least the rest of 2013. Goody.
