Neighborhood bar with dog-friendly patio headed to Memorial Heights: Try a new beer every day

    Eric Sandler
    Apr 5, 2014 | 10:00 am

Craft beer bars are one of Houston's hottest trends with multiple spots in neighborhoods all over the city serving a mix of locally brewed beers and out of town favorites. The success of that trend is behind Beer Market Co, which is coming soon to the space on Studemont formerly home to Texadelphia and Terlingua Border Cafe.

Envisioned as a come as you are neighborhood bar for the apartment-dwelling young professionals of Memorial Heights and Rice Military, Beer Market Co is the latest project from the group that operates 3rd Floor, Pub Fiction and Celtic Gardens in Midtown and CRISP in the Heights.

Both CRISP and 3rd Floor provide the rough template for Beer Market Co; a neighborhood bar with good food that's slightly more grown-up than some of the group's other properties. Partner Fidan Baca describes the menu as Modern American and adds that they're still finalizing specific dishes. Lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and late night options will all be available.

The beer, on the other hand, is pretty locked in. Drinkers can choose from 24 taps or a "beer vault" with 365 different beers. "One for everyday of the year," Baca observes. They're still finalizing the selection, but Baca promises that local beers will have a big part in the selection of both draft and bottle.

Inside, the design follows several popular motifs with reclaimed wood walls, Edison bulbs and stained concrete floors. Over 20 TVs hang from walls and ceilings; they'll show mostly sports but occasionally other programming. The owners are aiming for a "cozy" feel.

Baca is particularly excited about the patio, which will be dog friendly. He notes that so many of the local residents are dog owners and said the ownership group wanted to provide a place people can hang out with their pooches.

At all of the concepts, Baca says they're always asking their customers for feedback on how to improve. Beer Market will have a month-long soft opening to work on any bugs. "We're good at listening to people," Baca says. "If people don't like something, we'll change it."

The newest location of Kirby Ice House is now open in Clear Lake.

First announced in July, the expansive new bar is conveniently located near the Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston at 530 Bay Area Blvd. Like its siblings in Upper Kirby, Memorial, The Woodlands, and near the Heights, the Clear Lake location features Kirby Ice House’s winning formula of a huge indoor-outdoor bar with an extensive selection of beer and cocktails, lawn games, space for food trucks, and plenty of TVs for watching sports.

It also offer Kirby Ice House’s daily specials and happy hour discounts. They include $1 off draft beers on Tuesday, $5 select Texas drafts and liquors on Wednesday, Ladies Night on Thursday, and daytime specials on Saturday and Sunday.

The bar customized its interior for Clear Lake. For example, the design nods to NASA with a neon sign that depicts its signature cowgirl riding a rocket.

“One of the things we enjoy most is creating spaces that reflect the communities they serve,” co-owner Danny Evans said in a statement. “We never want our locations to feel copied and pasted. We want them to have their own personality, and we hope guests feel that from the moment they walk in.”

Beverage choices start with dozens of beers on tap alongside wines by-the-glass or bottle. Kirby Ice House also serves cocktails such as a cucumber-lime Moscow Mule, blood orange paloma, and lemonade Old Fashioned. A rotating roster of food trucks serves customers who want a bite with their beers. Taken together, the extensive selection and massive footprint have helped each location of Kirby Ice House rank among the highest’s grossing bars in Texas.

Kirby Ice House arrives just in time for football season. It opens at 11 am on Saturday and Sunday to ensure fans catch all the day’s action. It opens at 2 pm Monday-Friday.

Kirby Ice House welcomed hundreds of people to a pre-opening party on Labor Day. Alongside its full menu of drinks, special guests Lupe Tortilla and Eastbound Barbecue served food.
