Through Valentine's Day
Watches that cost as much as a luxury car: Cartier's fine pieces showcased in exclusive visit
For a watch to be complicated is a good thing.
That's what I learned during an exclusive viewing of the Cartier Fine Watchmaking collection now on display at the Cartier store in The Galleria. In the study of watchmaking, any feature in a timepiece beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds, is known as complication.
The luxury watches retail for about the same price as a luxury car (from around $50,000 on up).
And that's special.
Cartier has brought 20 of its finest watches to Houston through Valentine's Day. Among the favorites are the Santos 100 Skeleton watch, specially designed so that the bridges of the movement, shaped like Roman numerals, act as the dial of the watch, and the Rotonde de Cartier, a rose gold watch with workshop-crafted mechanical movement.
For the world traveler, the Calibre 9909 MC features a multiple time zone complication, sometimes known as “hours of the world,” that indicates the time in several cities simultaneously or individually on demand.
“Home” time is indicated on the lower dial in the center of the watch by a day/night hand featuring sun and moon symbols. “Traveler” time is shown by the main hands, which enable the second time zone to be read directly.
The luxury watches retail for about the same price as a luxury car (from around $50,000 on up). But they will last a lifetime. And you never have to worry about changing the oil.
