THEBUS hits the road: Texan Eric Winston's online sports TV network does itsfirst remote, invites fans
When Houston Texans right tackle Eric Winston and the behind-the-scenes creative team of Shawn Bouley and Chris Hayden first thought up their online sports TV network, one of the ideas centered around taking the show on the road every week to broadcast live from the site of each Monday Night Football game. The network's named THEBUS (pronounced Thee-bis) in part because the production was going to be on The Bus for a while.
That ultra-ambitious plan was shelved for the first season of Not Your Ordinary Sports Show, but that doesn't mean that Winston and the team aren't traveling. They are just going to keep the trips a little closer to home — and involve Houston-area fans.
For its sixth week, Not Your Ordinary Sports Show will broadcast live from The Billiard Factory in Northwest Houston on Monday night. Texans' fans are being encouraged to show up and meet Winston. Heck, even Dallas Cowboys fans won't be turned away.
Wessling is currently upset that the World Series-bound Rangers are called the Texas Rangers. "Shouldn't be allowed to be Texas. Should be "Dallas Rangers," he tweeted.
Winston will be there by 6:45 p.m. for a pre-show autograph session/meet and greet. One fan will go from meeter to commentator as well — with a winner selected from the crowd to sit in as a guest on the panel for the first quarter of the show (the other guests are political consultants Chris Begala and Jim McGrath, and John Wessling, the president of the Houston Comedy Union and a regular host on ESPN 97.5 FM). So you may want to read up on Rick Perry and build up some outrage on . . . well, anything.

All the fans can watch the first half hour of the broadcast (which starts at 7:30 p.m.) that runs during the New York Jets-Miami Dolphins game. The Billiard Factory, which is already staying open later than usual for the event, plans to close its doors to the public at 8 p.m. as Winston and his guests continue the broadcast on a closed set. The first live remote is another important step for a show that seems to be finding its own way.
Through five weeks, Not Your Ordinary Sports Show has served as companion viewing to the Monday Night Football game as planned, but it's also delivered plenty of moments that go beyond the games Winston, host Robert Henslee (the sports director at 610 AM) and the rotating cast of eclectic guests are watching.
Astronaut Scott Kelly found himself talking about how one poops in space — with some prodding from prankster professional golfer Steve Elkington.
Winston intimated that he may be faster than Arian Foster, the NFL's leading rusher in 2010. OK not exactly, but still funny viewing.
"I'm a huge football fan," Shelby Hodge said. "You wouldn't recognize me when I'm watching a football game. I'm jumping up and down, yelling at the screen."
CultureMap's own editor-at-large Shelby Hodge, most known for her high society coverage, went on and talked football, surprising many.
"I'm a huge football fan," Hodge said before her appearance. "You wouldn't recognize me when I'm watching a football game. I'm jumping up and down, yelling at the screen."
Hodge is the first and still the only woman who's appeared as a guest on the show so far. If you don't count Katie The Referee Girl, the young blonde who gives unique rulings on instant replay calls during the Monday Night football games and hands out drinks to show guests (Katie received a ton of extra air time last week, sitting in with the panel).
Not Your Ordinary Sports Show started as something of an experiment. Who starts a sports TV network while still playing professional football? Who starts an online-only sports TV network period?
Five shows in, many of the questions have been answered. This wasn't a lark for Winston that could peter out after a show or two. It's a serious business venture. Now, it's time to hit the road and take the message to his people.
