Light panel falls on fan at Texans game, puts him in hospital: What is going onat Reliant Stadium?
It's getting to the point where it's almost becoming hazardous to your health to attend a Houston Texans game.
Forget the on-field fireworks orchestrated by players like J.J. Watt. It's the real-life drama in the stands that keeps grabbing headlines.
The incident happened early in the second quarter and most of the second largest crowd in Texans' history didn't even notice it.
The latest saw one of the end zone LED displays fall off and tumble down into the stands where it landed on a fan during Sunday's season-opening 30-10 win over the Miami Dolphins. The man was quickly taken to the hospital with what's been described as "non life-threatening" injuries.
The incident happened early in the second quarter and most of the second largest crowd in Texans' history didn't even notice it.
It follows the Aug. 30 death of a fan at Texans preseason game (25-year-old Jonathan Kelly plunged three levels off an escalator at that game). And a wild brawl in the rafters at an Aug. 18 preseason game that's become something of a YouTube sensation.
That marks three high-profile stand incidents in less than a month — three incidents in the last three Texans home appearances. It's enough to make one wonder what's going on a Reliant. Is this just an unfortunate run of coincidences?
It's hard to link any of the incidents (the panel appears to be a facilities issue, Kelly's death came with him reportedly trying to slide down the outside of a railing and the fight touches on stadium security).
The Texans are not responsible for the stadium. That falls under the burden of Reliant Park. Stadium officials have yet to comment on the falling LED panel, but they did hold a somber press conference after Kelly's death in which they extended their sympathy to his family.
