Matt Schaub signs mega contract extension that surprises his teammates: Texansput all their Super chips on No. 8
If the Houston Texans are going to make the Super Bowl during this window of success, they're going to do it with Matt Schaub at quarterback.
The Texans removed any doubt about who their quarterback is, signing Schaub to a four-year, $62 million contract extension that will take him through the 2016 season. Schaub gets more than $25 million guaranteed and the security of being the Texans' guy — for now, the near future and the foreseeable future.
Schaub will never become a free agent. The 31-year-old now expects to finish his career as a Texan.
The news came out after the Texans' 30-10 season-opening victory over the Miami Dolphins and it caught even many of Schaub's teammates by surprise.
"I didn't even know Matt got his extension," linebacker Connor Barwin said when asked about it in the locker room. "I'm happy for him. That's great."
There was plenty of thought that the Texans would let Schaub play out this season and then decide what to do with his future. But at the midnight hour (the Texans have a policy of not negotiating contracts once the season kicks off), general manager Rick Smith called an audible.
Schaub will never become a free agent. The 31-year-old now expects to finish his career as a Texan.
"I'm excited to continue my career here in Houston and to finish my career in Houston," Schaub said.
Smith has now signed three offensive linchpins to long-term extensions (tailback Arian Foster, left tackle Duane Brown and Schaub). The pass-rushing Barwin will be the Texans' most prominent free agent of next off-season with no deal being worked out for him.
"That's behind me," Barwin said. "That's something the business people take care of and I let them handle it. I'm focusing on the season."
