Running for the cops
Jailbreak race to be sponsored by Houston Police Department & Tilman Fertitta:Could you escape?
Although increasing in popularity, adventure runs — fraught with danger and staffed by emergency crews — are not for the faint of heart.
That race genre now includes the Run the Jailbreak 5K, an off-the-grid run that the Houston Police Department and Tilman Fertitta ("The richest restaurateur in the world") are joining forces on.
The first annual race, which takes place "rain or shine" on Oct. 27, will benefit the Houston Police Foundation, a nonprofit chaired by Fertitta and supported by other local business leaders. Funds from registration ($60 until Oct. 13 and $70 until race day) will go to purchase Tactical Medical Kits and training for the HPD.
The 12-heat race will feature nearly 20 "muddy, wet and explosive" obstacles including tire walls, cargo nets, hurdles and trenches. The course covers 3.1 miles along the bayou at Tony Marron Park — and those who survive the grueling race will be treated to cold Shock Top beer, authentic barbecue and live music at the finish line.
