Dating Dynamo: Hometown boy Deric just wants someone to laugh with — and hecooks
Want to get up close and personal with your favorite Houston Dynamo player? Head to Drink Houston on April 30th for Cruz'in for A Cure, a fundraiser and party organized by Dynamo player Danny Cruz to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
Cruz and the Dynamo set a goal of raising $30,000 for LLS at a Wednesday press conference and this night will be a major part of that push.
The night will include a bachelor auction of 11 Dynamo hotties. Who should you bid on? Let CultureMap's dating personality quiz be your guide.
Tyler Deric isn't just a Dynamo, he's a native Houstonian — he grew up in Spring and went to Klein High School. This young goalkeeper is a prospect on the way up, an original member of the Dynamo Training Academy and the second homegrown player in Major League Soccer history to be promoted to the senior roster at the age of 20, so we expect hard work, loyalty and dedication.
Deric took time to answer all the important questions for CultureMap in anticipation of being auctioned off.
Stats:
22 years old from Spring.
Zodiac sign:
Virgo
Idea of a perfect date:
"Just a girl and myself, go somewhere where there's not a lot of people around so we can really talk and get to know each other. Maybe I'll cook a nice dinner or something."
Do you believe in love at first sight?
"Yes."
What's your favorite date movie?
"It's gotta be a movie where you can laugh, because laughter is the best on a date. Right now I'd probably say The Hangover."
If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?
"I would be a monkey. A mischievous monkey, so I could go around playing jokes on other animals."
Who's your celebrity crush?
"Minka Kelly and Scarlett Johansson."
Do you open doors for women?
"Yeah, of course."
Favorite make-out music:
"This is getting personal. Probably some R. Kelly or some Luther Vandross."
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
"Dog. I just got a yellow lab, his name is Charlie."
Give us your best pick-up line:
"Hi, I'm Tyler. That's all I got."
Sarah's appraisal: $5,200
The only thing cuter than a yellow lab puppy is a guy with a sense of humor and Southern manners. (He's not losing any points for the Matthew Fox scruff, either.) This one is serious boyfriend material.
Caroline's appraisal: $5,500
You've got to give Deric props for his hometown loyalty, and I love a guy that loves to laugh. As a goalkeeper, you know he's all about taking on the role of romantic protector. And the puppy doesn't hurt.
Longtime sportswriter Chris Baldwin's appraisal: $1,100
Would you bid more more on Kareem Jackson than Matt Schaub in an auction because Kareem has a good laugh? OK maybe, the Texans' oft-burned Jackson isn't the best example, but you get the idea. Deric brings a ton of potential to the table, but so far it's still just potential.
He played great in a start against Sporting Kansas City, forcing that powerhouse offense to go into overtime to pull out a 1-0 win. But right now, Deric is still very much the backup to Tally Hall. He's on the rise, but do you want to pay like he's already arrived? Deric's so humble that a dinner with him might almost be too normal. Who's heard of a humble professional athlete? Please.
