Who couldn't appreciate the irony of the Ladies Who Lunch turning out in their midday finery in support of a cause that is so important that fashion really doesn't matter at all. Such was the case when Child Advocates hosted its annual Angels of Hope luncheon at the Westin Galleria Hotel.
Close to 600 women and a sprinkling of men gathered in support of the organization that works to stem the tide of child abuse and find safe havens for abused and neglected children. By training and supporting volunteers who serve as court-appointed advocates for youngsters, the non-profit fills a void in the system. This year, 737 trained Child Advocates volunteers are expected to serve 2,000 youngsters.
As is tradition with the annual fundraiser, chairs Kim Tutcher and Lesha Elsenbrook recognized long-time board member and Child Advocates supporter Debbie Martinez as the day's honoree. Joining in the program was Marie Sonnier, whose life was changed by a court-appointed advocate 15 years ago. The presentation of her story was a thank you to that volunteer, Marci Weinstein, who received huge applause from the room.
And on to lighter things, Neiman Marcus presented Elie Tahari's 2011 resort/spring collection, a froth of black and gold, sequined and sheer ensembles.
Among the ladies turning out for the worthy cause and enjoying the camaraderie of the day were Page Parkes-Eveleth, Lynda Transier, Karen Johnson, Jana Arnoldy, Alice Mosing, Cam Canion, Denise Monteleone, Ginger Blanton, Pat Osborne, Betty Campbell, Kathy Goossen, Cindy Garbs, Ellie Sweeney, Ellie Francisco and Cathy Cleary. Two in the mix were Houston Texans wives — Laurie Schaub, married to quarterback Matt Schaub, and Rachel Rackers, wife of kicker Neil Rackers. That handful of gents included Tom Elsenbrook, Dan Tutcher, Vidal Martinez and Milton West.
